If you suspect a gas leak in or around your home, here are steps for what to do. Natural gas has no odor. Gas company’s add a chemical to make gas a distinctive odor, which make it smell like rotten eggs. If you smell this odor it’s an indication you have got gas leaking from a source.
Gas Leaks Outside of your home:
- Leave the area of the gas leak. You want to distance yourself and your family from the source of the odor.
- Do not start or move powered equipment.
- Call 911 and 811 to report the gas leak. Then call your gas company to report the leak. Place all calls in another location away from the suspected leak.
- Stay away from the area with the leak.
Gas Leaks Inside your home:
- Immediately leave the home or business with the gas leak and distance yourself once outside away from the odor.
- Do not turn any lights, appliances or electrical sources on.
- Do not light a match, and do not open or close windows.
- Do not start a vehicle parked in a garage.
- Call 911 and 811 to report the gas leak. Then call your gas company to report the leak. Place all calls in another location away from the suspected leak.
- Stay away from the area with the leak.
