Check The Source of Your Tap Water
First, you will have to do some research of where you are getting your water. Are you getting it from a well or from a city? Where is the city utility water coming from? Is it in danger of contamination by agriculture chemicals, human waste, or hazardous chemicals?
If you feel that the water is in danger, the best thing to do is to have someone professionally test it.

If you want to be on the safe side of things. You can go to a hardware store and buy a heavy duty reverse osmosis system to filter out the dangerous chemicals. This system is thorough and can be installed to every water outlet in your house.
