Pipes will be pipes and wear down over time. If you suspect that you are living around with a possible leak. The best thing to do is to call a licensed plumber from Carter’s My Plumber to check! Why? Because a plumber can go in and diagnose the problem safety and give you a fair price! Here are some checkpoints to follow.
Why You Have a High Water Bill
You are Using More Water
If there is more of a party living in your house than last month or you are watering your grass a lot. This could be a reason. It is obvious let’s move on.
Leaky & Runny Toilets
Toilets are a major part of households water usage. You can test if your toilet is running by listening for hissing. It could be the flapper in your tank.
Another way you can test is by marking where the water line is in the tank. If you mark it, go a couple hours without flushing, and it is lower. Then your toilet is running.
Check For a Leak
There may not be an obvious leak in your house that you can find. So, a way you can check for one is by first:
Turn off all the water in the house. Then: go outside to your water meter. Next: open the lid and check if this little triangle is moving (It looks like what is pictured)
Red Triangle on Water Meter
If it is moving and you know all the water is off. You have a leak. Depending on how fast the triangle is moving is how rapid the leak is..well..leaking.
Slab Leak
The mother of all leaks is the one mentioned above. You may know this is happening if you notice that your floor or carpet is wet and warping. These leaks are crucial to get repaired fast.
Other signs that you have a slab leak is the sound of running water and a musty smell. At Carter’s My Plumber, we can come out to your home and detect if this is the problem.
